Lose Weight

So many "quick fix" weight loss programs leave us feeling frustrated and depressed, largely due to the fact that they leave us undernourished and fail to achieve the desired outcome. The ability to lose weight successfully depends on a number of factors, and genearally speaking quick fix programs fail to take note of these requirements.

One aspect of weight loss that is often forgotten about is the effect of our attitudes and our thought processes. A negative attitude can be self defeating. One way to overcome this problem is through the use of hypnosis, this can often be the missing link that helps you to lose weight more effectively.

How can you lose weight or gain weight with hypnosis? Does hypnotism really works? What is hypnotism really like?

Hypnosis and weight loss can be effective if you give it the chance to retrain your mind. Mind control will help you to know when your stomach is full. Hypnosis and weight loss works through a process of positive messages and mantras that are repeated about your goals in life while you are in an almost sleep-like state. This encourages your mind to see things in a different way

There is a school of thought that believes successful weight loss is a matter of a positive mind set. It is important to believe that you will lose weight and also to see yourself as slim so that you will eat like a slim person. If used in this way Hypnotherapy has shown to be an excellent aid to successful weight loss.

Studies indicate that food addiction is as hard to break as a cocaine addiction, and is often caused by compulsive binging. Generally speaking people who overeat know they have a problem and that they need to do something about it. There is also evidence to show that people do better when treated on an individual basis, rather than through group therapy. If you choose to try hypnotherapy to help you to lose weight then it may be advisable to book an individual session to see how you get on.

A recent study followed thousands of participants starting a healthy lifestyle plan. This study, spearheaded by Kaiser Permanente, a health guru, found that the group who kept track of everything that they ate lost twice as much weight as those who did not. Very often weight loss programs fail because the dieter is either disorganized or reluctant to be completely honest about what they have eaten. Writing down your daily intake of food helps to eliminate these two factors.

There are various factors that affect the rate at which we lose weight. Age affects our metabolism, slowing down about 5% every 10 years after age 40. Males typically burn more fat than females due to the fact that they possess a greater muscle mass (more muscle generally means a higher rate of metabolism). Hormone changes at the different stages of our lives can also affect our metabolisms and ultimately our ability to lose or gain weight.

Although the end result is largely dependant on the food we eat, it is also important to remember that the actions of the mind can play a vital role in the over all success of the diet

Lose Weight Fast

How many times have you seen adverts offering amazing weight loss programs. If you were overweight and needed to lose weight for that special occasion you would probably be delighted to see one of those adverts

So many diets today offer an opportunity to lose weight fast as a way of encouraging those people who are considerably over weight to buy into the latest fad dietary system. "Lose 10lb in 2 weeks". Claims such as this are aimed at a very vulnerable sector of the community. Many overweight people want a quick fix. They want to be slim and the sooner the better.

Although the chance to lose weight fast is what they are looking for most people would admit that it would be more beneficial and more important to have a more sustained weight loss, especially in the long run.

Many people end up being yoyo dieters as a result of these fad diets, as if you lose weight too quickly you are inevitably losing water and muscle as well as losing fat. As soon as you start eating normally, you will regain this weight very quickly.

Anyone looking to lose weight quickly is really only concerned with the weight they see when they stand on the bathroom scales. There is a misconception that this is a measure of success or failure. This couldn't be further from the truth. The weight lost will inevitably be a combination of fat loss, water loss and muscle loss. This is not necessarily what we want to see and undoubtedly will not lead to permanent weight loss.

If we are concerned with health as well as weight loss, we should be concerned about both the amount of fat tissue and the amount of lean muscle tissue. The body fat percentage is actually more important than your weight. Having more fat than lean tissue increases your health risk. Ideally no more than 15% of a man's body and 22 % of a woman's body should be fat.

Most diets that promise you will lose weight fast will show a sudden weight loss in the first week. With the fast weight loss diet the dieter will probably begin to plateau after the 2nd or 3rd week. Energy will start to wane because of the dietary regime they have been following. As a result the dieter will start to eat a little more and some of the weight lost will be gained

The diet that has a slower approach may also see a sudden weight loss in the first week. This, like the faster diets, will be mainly water, but then a steady loss of 1lb or 1.5 lb a week will subsequently be experience. At the end of a 12 week period the fast weight loss dieter will have lost maybe 2 -3 lb whereas the other dieter will have lost nearer to 13lb and will have experienced more sustained energy levels.

It is also inevitable that the dieter who loses weight too quickly will have lost some lean muscle which will ultimately be detrimental to their health

Whether you want to lose weight fast or experience slower more sustained weight loss, the key to weight control is to keep your blood sugar levels even. Excess glucose turns into fat. A lack of glucose leaves you feeling tired and lethargic.

Your glucose balance is influenced by many factors, including:-

Your sugar and carbohydrate intake
Your stress and stimulant load
Food combining
The quality and type of fat you eat
The fiber in your food
Vitamins and Minerals
Hormone Imbalances
Exercise

Weight loss is a complex issue and the desire to lose weight fast should be viewed with a degree of scepticism if you are to maintain your desired weight and at the same time remain fit and healthy. So next time you see an advert promising unrealistic results treat it with more than a modicum of caution.

Lose Weight

One of the biggest obstacles for anyone wanting to lose weight is the bathroom scales. We can become obsessed with them to the extent that we weigh in everyday and if we haven't lost weight we lose heart So rule number one for effective, long lasting weight loss is to throw your scales away. Your scales will not tell you how much fat you have lost. Did you know it is possible to gain weight but lose size? This may sound like a contradiction in terms but it is absolutely true.

So what causes this? If you are following a high protein diet, which is essential if you want to lose weight, and at the same time you are following an exercise program it is likely that you will be converting unwanted fat into lean muscle. As this process takes place your body is becoming more toned and therefore your measurements will be less. However at the same time the fat you are losing will weigh less than the muscle you are gaining and so the weight loss you were looking for will be replaced initially with a weight gain. Once your body has adjusted to the new regime then you will find losing weight will happen quickly and easily

In order to cope with this initial weight gain you need to re program your mental attitude towards your weight loss. If you are feeling good and your clothes are fitting better, focus on that rather than what the scales are telling you.

When the scales don't show the weight loss you were hoping for don't fall into the trap of cutting calories. Cutting calories can be disastrous and will certainly do nothing to help you to lose weight. In fact it is more likely to do the reverse. The body's response to calorific restriction is to decrease the number of enzymes in the body that burn fat and increase the number of enzymes that store fat. Ultimately you will alter your hormone output and your metabolism will slow down to respond to the reduction in fuel. If on top of this you start to do more exercise your body will be even more stressed and your thyroid will slow down your metabolism even further to keep you alive. You will not lose weight under these conditions.

If instead you eat a protein rich diet and build your lean muscle, the muscle in turn will improve your ability to burn unwanted fat and ultimately giving you the weight loss you so desire. If treated sensibly the body has the ability to regulate itself. If you starve it, it will go into protective mode, and take precautionary measures that will ultimately mean that you won't lose weight.

In addition to your high protein diet daily exercise will also help you to lose weight especially if you raise your heart rate for at least 20 mins during your workout.

So take my advice and throw away your scales and trust that you will lose weight effectively by eating more protein and not by cutting your calorific intake.

Some people are so desperate to lose weight they will try anything rather than take a long hard look at the the food they are eating and admit that they have an unhealthy, unbalanced diet. Changing dietary habits is the single most difficult thing for any would be dieter to do. This is the reason why they may resort to slimming pills to help them to lose weight

Meridia is a medication that is often used to help people lose weight. Those who use Meridia will usually be prescribed this medication by a doctor. This particular medication is usually administered along with a regular diet and exercise plan. Usually Meridia is prescribed to patients who are at least 30 pounds overweight. It is not the medication itself that is meant to help patients. Rather, it is both the drug and regular dieting and exercise that is meant to help patients reach a more ideal and healthy weight.

Some people wonder if Meridia really does work for weight loss. It can work, but it does not work for everyone. For instance, there are certain people, such as those who have anorexia or bulimia who this medication is not usually recommended for. Likewise, those who are prescribed an MAOI antidepressant are not usually able to take this drug.

There are many side effects associalted with this drug and those who take it could possibly develop high blood pressure or fast heart rate. Also, it is not recommended for patients who suffer from any one of the following conditions: heart disease, kidney trouble, hypertension, or epilepsy. The most common side effects of this drug are dry mouth, anorexia, constipation, and insomnia. This drug is known to be habit-forming as well, and is classified as a controlled substance. It is not recommended for those with a history of drug abuse. This certainly is a scary way to lose weight.

If you have been recommended Meridia by your doctor, you may decide to look for it at your local drug store. If you cannot find this medication locally you will want to look for it online. This particular drug is often made available for overnight shipping. The generic form of Meridia is also made available as well.

Sometimes you can order Meridia online for a discount. Make sure you know who you are buying this drug from, however. Only those who are properly licensed to sell it should be offering it to you. If you plan to use Meridia for weight loss, I would highly recommend that you have the consent of your doctor.

If you need more information about this drug and what it can do for weight loss before purchasing it, there are Meridia reviews available. These are usually offered online for free.

There is a lot to be said for basic self discipline, after all as any dieter will know a weight loss diet has to be a diet for life not just for the duration of the weight loss program, so do yourself a favour and think twice before you resort to a slimming pill to help you to lose weight

Lose Weight

Why can't I lose weight?? There is a sense of feeling doomed to being overweight in that question. I sometimes wonder whether that is just an excuse as I know that given the right dietary regime it is not that difficult.

So how we can we help those people who feel they are doomed to a lifetime of obesity?

The key to this problem would seem to be offer correct nutritional education. So many people jump on the bandwagon of the latest fad diet and when they don't lose weight automatically assume the problem is with them. Well they certainly do have a problem being overweight in the first place, but the reason they don't lose weight on a particular diet can be many and varied.

In order to lose weight the bottom line is calorific intake has to be less than calorific output. The big mistake many people make is in thinking that this automatically means that they have to cut calories in order to be successful. This is an inappropriate and potentially dangerous approach to weight loss. Cutting calories can be anything from missing a meal to eating like a sparrow or counting calories in biscuits and cakes. It has some major flaws and the small number of calories that people consume on this type of diet can even result in people putting on weight. The main reason for this is that starving the body has two negative effects. Firstly it loses muscle and muscle burns fat, and secondly the body's hormones and enzymes are disrupted making it more difficult for the body to lose fat.

Have you ever heard the saying "One man's meat is another man's poison"? This saying has more truth to it than we may be aware of. Not only can it affect your ability to reach and maintain your target weight but it can also affect your overall health. You may have wondered why one person who follows a particular diet can lose weight while another person loses very little or even puts weight on. Of course there is always the possibility that they have cheated and not stuck to the diet and that is why it hasn't worked for them. If the saying "ones man's meat………" has any validity then perhaps we need to look at this a little more closely.

There has been a movement for many years now towards the belief that there are distinct metabolic types, and that for optimum health and wellness you should eat according to your personal metabolic type. Simply put there are 3 basic metabolic types:- protein, carbohydrate and mixed. Each type should eat their protein fats and carbohydrates in a particular ratio. For example a protein type will need a much higher ratio of protein and fat than a carbohydrate or mixed type.

Although this may appear to be a more complex approach it may be necessary for those people who find that they don't lose weight easily whatever diet they try and who subsequently get so disillusioned that they finally give up

6. Lose Weight 9
Lose Weight

Globally the need to lose weight has become a very serious issue. It has been confirmed by the World Health Organization that obesity has now reached epidemic proportions. With the advent of fast foods and a more sedentary lifestyle more and more people are becoming seriously overweight and consequently are contracting health problems that are synonymous with their weight problems. The food industry have been guilty of producing many new an exciting tastes to tickle our taste buds, to the extent that real food can easily appear bland and uninteresting. The general public are equally guilty of being taken in by these new foods and have been reluctant to see them as nothing more than sheer temptation.

Obesity is one of the fastest developing health concerns particularly as it can lead to type 11 diabetes and heart disease. The need to lose weight is no longer just about the way we look but more importantly to do with the potential for serious health problems. This is particularly true of those who have been overweight since childhood and so understandably our governments are showing real concern for the health and well being of our overweight and obese young people. Of course the skeptics would say they are viewing them as a potential future expense for the health service and sadly they may well be right.

So what can we do to help our young people to lose weight? Although is a difficult question, the main responsibility for the fact that many young people are over weight has to be with their parents. Dietary habits and food preferences start at a very early age at a time when only the parents have control on what their children eat. Unfortunateley many parents have bad dietary habits themselves and so these habits are passed on to their children. The next responsibility is with the playgroups and nurseries that young children attend. My experience of the food served at nurseries is that it is high in carbohydrates and very low in protein, probably to make it more cost effective, but for some children this can be the start of a carbohydrate rich diet that can cause weight problems in the future. I have also been aware of playgroups and nurseries giving children snacks of biscuits and cake and occasionally rewards of sweets and chocolates, particularly if it is a child's birthday. Although many young children will cope with these foods without gaining weight their will be other children who will develop a liking for sweet foods and will subsequently develop weight related problems. None of these seemingly harmless habits are helping our young people to lose weight as we are simply encouraging dietary habits that will be difficult to break in the future.

There is a widespread misconception amongst many parents and other adults that children need or deserve sweets or sweet treats. Children will only desire these things once they have been given a taste for them. They don't need sugar in their diets and would be far healthier and better off without them. I have observed children in school eating nothing but cakes and biscuits and sugar laden yoghurts for their lunch, followed by something sweet and fizzy to drink. Whatever happened to the healthy savoury sandwich??? Children who subsequently need to lose weight will not have the benefit of a healthy dietary habits to fall back on and so they will find it very difficult to lose weight. These are also the children who later in life will have a higher chance of falling prey to conditions such as hypoglycemia and diabetes

All children should be encouraged to have a well balanced healthy diet with the correct balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate. A healthy diet will more than compensate for the occasional sweet treat and through their healthy approach to food and diet they are less likely to be amongst those who need to lose weight in the future.

There have been many excellent programs on the television showing how families completely eradicate the unhealthy foods from their diets. They were encouraged to clear their cupboards of all the unhealthy food and start with a clean slate. They then restocked with healthy foods and started to learn the art of home cooking. The children naturally created a fuss to begin with but eventually they were able to appreciate that these healthy foods were not only going to help them avoid the need to lose weight but also help to improve their behavior, their performance at school and their general overall health both in the present and in the future. It didn't take long for their diets to be transformed. But the parents had to be prepared to persevere. If you give into your child they will know that they can win the battle and your job will become even harder.

Does your child need to lose weight? Do something about it now and be assured that one day they will thank you for it. A consistent approach is the only answer. There is no quick fix and no half way house and at the end of the day the ultimate responsibility lies with the parents

7. Lose Weight 8
Lose Weight

The body is a finally tuned mechanism. Many of us treat it with too little respect and wonder why it responds negatively from time to time. Disease is largely due to external factors. It isn't necessarily the same for any 2 people, but the likelihood is that there will be others just like you who have had the same outcome. Weight should also be viewed in the same way. If you have eaten too much or eaten the wrong foods then you may well put on weight. That may sound like a very simplistic approach, but that is the basic reason why people gain weight and also why tobe able to lose weight can be so difficult for them

In order to really understand the weight loss process we also need to understand the complexities of the process that made us overweight in the first place.

Basically if you are alive and breathing you have a family of hormones and enzymes that are intended to fight the fat. Unfortunately our poor and inconsistent dietary habits means that changes take place in the body make it more difficult for the body to lose fat and ultimately to lose weight.

If we miss a meal or eat too many carbohydrates our bodies respond by elevating the stress hormones. The body then thinks it is in a life threatening situation and responds by releasing stored glycogen into the blood to raise the blood sugar. If this cycle is repeated on a regular basis our bodies will be experiencing bouts of high and low blood sugar causing the body to be over stressed and therefore unable to lose weight .

If the body has elevated blood sugar levels, the response is to release insulin to lower the blood sugar. Insulin levels will remain high if the body is consistently under nourished with the wrong food combinations. Excess insulin along with inactivity can prevent weight loss due to the fact that inactive muscles become insulin resistant and more and more calories are stored in the fat cells. This can ultimately progress to situation where the body becomes insulin resistant and consequently it can be even more difficult to lose weight.

If you find yourself accumulating fat in the middle of your body then you have more than likely become insulin resistant. The ability to lose weight can be incredibly difficult if this is the case. However even more important is the fact the fat accumulation will eventually extend to other areas of the body and you will be come progressively more obese. As the muscles and fat cells become less sensitive to insulin, blood sugar levels will rise higher and the body will be forced to use the pancreas to help to lower the levels. In a worst case scenario this can result in Type 11 Diabetes.

There is a belief amongst those who are overweight that they can be overweight and be healthy. This just isn't the case. Being overweight can in itself increase your chances of contracting a life threatening disease, on the other hand the unhealthy life style you have been leading may also be the cause of the disease. Health and being overweight do not equate.

To be able lose weight successfully depends on many factors, one of which is turning fat into lean muscle. You need to eat the correct foods for your metabolic type and do the appropriate exercises. Very often this can result in an initial weight gain as you gain muscle (which weighs more than fat). Then as if by magic your body will start to lose weight possibly even faster than normal.

Because muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in your body, your ability to burn up unwanted fat and subsequently lose weight is improved. However it is important to remember that although you may think that to lose weight is your goal the chances are what you are really aiming for is a more streamlined body. If in order to achieve a more streamlined shape you need to convert fat into lean muscle and gain a bit of weight in the process, then weight loss has to become a secondary issue.

Many slimming cubs now encourage you to measure yourself as well as weighing yourself as you are likely to lose size faster than you lose weight

8. Lose Weight 7
Lose Weight

The number of people whose desire to lose weight is a top priority is increasing daily. We hear regularly on the news that there are more and more young children with weight problems and the number of clinically obese adults is almost becoming an epidemic.

The number of programs to help you to Lose Weight has risen dramatically to meet this ever increasing need and they all have their various promises of "amazing weight loss" in record time.

The latest fad weight loss diets make trying to lose weight sound like a fun holiday, but as we know only too well weight loss is far from fun for most people, in fact it can become an obsession or a complete turn off. The information available has become an absolute minefield and many people are struggling to know which program they should choose. Unfortunately if you give people too many choices they often end up doing nothing.

So why has the need to lose weight become such an epidemic? As with all things there is never a simple answer. It would appear that 2 people can eat similar foods and one will be overweight and the other will be as "thin as stick". Although this can be very frustrating, often for both parties concerned, it is not easy to ascertain why this should be.

At the end of the day it is up to each individual to understand their own bodies and know what foods they can eat and what foods either have a bad effect on them or cause them to put on weight. Knowing how to lose weight is an individual business. In the same way that two people can eat the same food and one puts on weight and the other doesn't two overweight people can go on the same weight loss diet and one will lose weight and the other may at best stay the same or at worst may even put weight on. So why should this be?

There is one basic reason why people can vary so much. Simply put they are different metabolic types. Of course as I said early this is not a simple matter and of course the reasons for these metabolic differences are much more complicated. However even at the basic level it does help to know that there are very definitive reasons why one person finds it relatively easy to lose weight while another person finds it extremely difficult to shift those stubborn pounds/kilograms.

So why are so many people being diagnosed as clinically obese. Basically most people have a poor diet lacking in good nutritional principles. The reason why people put weight on in the first place can often be different from the reason why they find it so difficult to lose weight. But if they were eating a well balanced nutritious diet in the first place it is very unlikely that weight loss would now be an issue for them. By that I mean eating food as nature intended, so no weird and wonderful chicken nuggets that look like they never saw chicken, or low fat spreads that are so highly processed their molecular structure isn't even recognized by our digestive systems. Did you know that margarine is just one molecule different from plastic??

If you want to be slim and healthy then feed your body "real food". A good rule of thumb is - if your ancestors didn't eat it then you shouldn't eat it either.

Many of the products intended to help you to lose weight use additives that mimic real food and our bodies don't know how to respond. Diet drinks for instance are now being sited as one of the main reasons why people are unable to lose weight, mainly due to the sugar substitutes that are used, which incidentally are also being linked to various health complaints.

How many of us would treat our cars with as little respect as we treat our bodies?

If we treated our bodies with the same care and attention we give to our cars then the need to lose weight would be a thing of the past. Most of us would ensure that our cars had regular overhauls, yearly MOT's, regular oil change and we would use good quality petrol appropriate to the car we are driving. It is obvious common sense - but not so obvious it would appear when it comes to looking after our bodies!!

Lose Weight

There are many approaches to weight loss ranging from joining a slimming club to following the latest diet fad from a book or even online. Many people are put off by these methods and want to keep it as simple as possible. There are some generic weight loss tips that anyone can follow that will not only help you to lose weight but will also raise your overall level of health.

Here are some simple rules that can help you to lose weight.

1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it is the first fuel your body receives to ensure it is working on optimum energy. A breakfast that contains a reasonable amount of good quality protein will ensure that your body is utilizing the protein to turn fat into lean muscle. That of course is very important for anyone who wants to lose weight
2. Have some protein at every meal for the reasons stated above. Protein also helps to speed up the metabolic rate, ensures that you feel full after your meal and also ensures that you are unlikely to feel hungry before your next meal.
3. Tea and coffee and alcohol are stimulants and can play havoc with your metabolism. Avoid wherever possible.
4. Eat regularly. Five smaller meals is actually better than three larger meals, as every time you eat you are stimulating your metabolism to help you lose weight. But remember to eat some protein each time rather than carbohydrate heavy snacks
5. Drink plenty of water. Lack of water can cause the body to hold on to water as it is afraid that there won't be enough. This can cause water retention. Also hunger is often one of the body's cries for water and a glass of water may just satisfy those hunger pangs
6. Exercise regularly. Twenty minutes exercise that raises the heart rate is ideal. Any exercise you do after that however small will burn more calories. If you don't like structured exercise find ways of increasing your activity. Run upstairs instead of walking. Walk briskly to the shop instead of taking the car. Stretch your muscles, by literally stretching your arms and legs and turning/twisting your upper body. It is advisable to seek the help of an expert re exercise as it is very easy to do unnecessary damage if you don't know what you are doing
7. If you do like exercise weight training can be beneficial as muscle helps to burn fat - an essential component of you need to lose weight. Again the help of a trainer would be beneficial to ensure you are doing the right exercises for you
8. Sort out any food intolerances you may have as they can prevent you from being able to lose weight. Food intolerances can cause all sorts of health problems including the inability to lose weight
9. Begin to think of yourself as becoming the person you want to be. Think of yourself as slim rather than thinking of yourself as overweight as this will encourage you to eat like a slim person
10. Throw away your scales. If you lose weight according to your scales you may just have lost muscle or water. This is not an indication you have burned any fat. The best way is to take your measurements once a week. That way you will soon see the results of turning fat into lean muscle and consequently a leaner slimmer you.

There are so many myths that surround the weight loss industry that it isn't surprising that so many people fail to lose weight. So many diets are fad diets and encourage quick weight loss at the expense of lasting weight loss. Those who do manage to lose weight often fail to maintain that weight and very soon return to their previous weight and heavier. Keep it simple and use your common sense. If it makes sense then likely it will work. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is and you are unlikely to lose weight healthily and permanently.

10. Lose Weight 5
Lose Weight

Losing weight is a complex issue. Many people who are overweight really don't understand how they got to be that weight. Many of them will tell you they have healthy diets and don't over eat. Some will even tell you they eat very little. Unfortunately we have habit of lying to ourselves when we don't want to face the truth. It is easier to pretend that we eat sensibly if we don't want to have to change our eating habits. But the bottom line is if we delude ourselves we will never lose weight. The start of a successful weight loss regime must be an honest acceptance that we have some bad dietary habits that have lead us to this point. Then and only then can we hope to lose weight successfully

Having run a slimming club for many years I have seen many hundreds of people who are desperate to lose weight. When a new person joins a slimming club it is normal to ask them a few questions about their dietary habits so that you can start to build a picture of why they are overweight and how you can help them to successfully lose weight.

Many people simply see themselves as fat and unattractive and so consequently if they see themselves as fat they will eat as if they are fat diminishing their chances to lose weight considerably. One of the first things they need to do to overcome this is to think of themselves as thin and then they will be more inclined to eat as a thin person thus increasing their ability to lose weight.

Of course there is far more to it than that, but all these aspects need to be taken into consideration if the ability to lose weight is to be optimized. It is a form of mind over matter and also fits in with the ideas put forward by the law of attraction - you are what you think you are. If you think you are slim then you will attract slimness. If you want to lose weight successfully it is no use eating all the right foods and doing all the exercises if deep down you see yourself as fat and unattractive as you will soon give up, your ability to lose weight will be diminished and you will become once again the fat person you think you are.

The dietary habits of many of my customers were nothing less than shocking. Never having experienced real food cravings myself I found it hard to believe that anyone could eat a 2 liter tub of ice cream in one sitting, or a whole cake or even a whole packet of biscuits. But these cravings where very real to some people and were the main reason why they put weight on in the first place and then found it so difficult to lose weight. Sometimes the weight loss was the easy part but keeping it off was the most difficult

Most food cravings are cravings for sugar or white flour products that convert quickly into sugar. This is due to the fact that the person concerned has an inability to stabilize their blood sugar levels and so every time their blood sugar drops they have a craving for sugar to raise the blood sugar level as quickly as possible. Unfortunately this soon creates a yoyo effect and hypoglycemia is the result - constant low blood sugar - resulting in the regular need for sugar intake. This can be remedied by ensuring that your diet is high in complex carbohydrates as the more complex they are the longer it takes to break them down and the longer the body has to use the energy they are producing. In really bad cases supplementing with chromium can help to stabilize the blood sugar levels as long as this is done in conjunction with a diet high in complex carbohydrates. This will ultimately help you to lose weight more effectively.

There were a number of people who were surprised when they didn't lose weight. Mainly this would be because they would have virtually eaten nothing during the previous week. They tended to equate no food with weight loss and were equally surprised to hear that to lose weight you have to eat or your metabolism will cease to work. It was almost as if they had become afraid to eat in case they didn't lose weight. This type of dieting can be very dangerous as the body starts to lose lean muscle and the whole system goes into red alert until normal eating is resumed

So many weight problems that I came across were of a psychological nature. People's perceptions of themselves and what they needed to do to lose weight were so distorted that weight loss was almost an impossibility.

If the person trying to lose weight doesn't recognize that they have a weight problem then it is going to be very difficult to get them to stick to a weight loss diet. Equally they may see they have a problem but can't themselves ever being slim. They have a defeatist attitude before they have even begu

If weight loss is to be successful, it needs to be approached with a healthy mind and a positive attitude. Without those two things it is unlikely that success will be long lasting

The cause of weight gain is something about which there seems to be a divergence of opinion. Some people are of the opinion that if you eat too much you will gain weight. Others say if you eat the wrong foods you will gain weight. There is also the opinion that you will gain weight if you lead a sedentary lifestyle. While all of these reasons have some truth in them they are not the full story. Why is it that two people can eat exactly the same food and one will gain weight while the other remains slim?? So you can see the weight loss industry have to ensure that they take these facts into consideration if we are to unravel the conundrum of how we gain weight versus how we lose weight.

There are so many diets available either in books, online or in various slimming clubs in our respective countries all telling you the best way to lose weight. Being overweight has reached epidemic proportions and so the "quick fix" regimes have appeared to meet the demand.

To understand why weight loss is such a massive industry we need to look at the conditions under which people get overweight in the first place.

1. Young Children This is perhaps the most worrying group. Being able to successfully lose weight has become a real issue for many young children, but how do they get so over weight in the first place? In many cases it is simply due to bad dietary habits. Too many carbohydrate heavy meals, sugary snacks, sugary drinks, fast foods to name but a few. Once these habits have been established at an early age it is very difficult to break them. There is also an increase in a more sedentary life style. Computer games instead of a game of football or chasing around the park. This lack of exercise is compounding the weight loss problem and storing up major health problems for the future.

2. Teenagers

Historically teenagers have been prone to "puppy fat" This is a time (during puberty) when the sex hormones are working overtime and causing havoc with the metabolic cycle. If care is not taken during this phase then as with young children bad habits are formed and can contribute to weight and health problems in the future. Controlling weight by adopting good dietary habits will not only ensure that they lose weight is permanently and will also help to avoid any health problems cased by eating inappropriately.

3. Pregnancy

Pregnancy is notorious for causing an increase in weight, not just the weight of the baby and the surrounding fluid but also because pregnant mums either have insatiable cravings for certain foods or they mistakenly feel they must eat for two. It is also the case that when you have a large "lump" in front of you then concern about your slim figure seems to disappear and it becomes an opportunity to eat all those things you may normally be careful to avoid. Of course it is not appropriate to lose weight in pregnancy for obvious reasons but that doesn't mean you can't be sensible about what you eat and ensure that you keep any weight increase to a minimum. Once the baby has been born it is equally important to have a well balanced diet especially if you are breast feeding. A sensible diet along with the appropriate exercises will ensure that you lose weight safely.

4. Young Mums

Young mums can be very prone to put on weight for one very good reason, they rarely have time to eat properly and can often find themselves picking at the food they prepare for the children or the food their children don't eat. This form of "grazing" can be the root cause of many overweight mums and why trying to lose weightby attending slimming clubs becomes so important. Ideally if you aim to eat with the children then the need to pick will be reduced. At the end of the day you have to exert some willpower and simply throw away any uneaten food rather than falling into the trap of becoming a human dustbin and making the ability to lose weight a real issue.

5. The Third Age (55 +)

As you get older your need for food seems to reduce as you become less active. However what tends to happen is that we become less active but we continue to eat the same amount of food. Also our hormone levels change at this time of life and can cause havoc with our metabolisms. Eating less and maintaining an exercise regime is very important to ensure that you lose weight

At each stage of life we have issues that have to be addressed and dealt with if we are to avoid the pitfalls that lead to an unnecessary increase in weight

Lose Weight

There is a lot of speculation in the health industry regarding what constitute a healthy way to lose weight. Should you be following a high protein diet, a low calorie diet or maybe a low fat diet. At the end of the day the most important thing to consider is which diet is going to ensure that you burn the fat.

Weight loss really is a burning issue for everyone who wants to lose weight, as that is what you need to do. You need to burn off the fat It may surprise you to know that every time you miss a meal - just one meal- your body increases the release of lipogenic (fat storing) enzymes. At the same time the lipolytic (fat burning) enzymes are decreased. Unfortunately this is much more pronounced in women than in men with three times the amount of lipogenic enzymes being produced in women and only a third of the amount of lipolytic enzymes being produced. So immediately you can see that eating less food by missing a meal isn't going to help you to lose weight, especially of you are a woman, in fact it is going to do completely the reverse.

According to Paul Chek of the Chek Institute, if you eat a hearty, well balanced breakfast and have regular small meals throughout the day your body's metabolism will be elevated and you will burn the fat more easily, thus increasing your ability to lose weight. This is also helped by the fact that you are more likely to be physically active during the day.

It may be that you prefer a small breakfast of coffee and toast and jam followed by a pastry for lunch, in that case you are likely to be very hungry by the evening and will want to eat a large evening meal at a time when your body is tiring and less likely to use the energy provided by your meal, and so the excess will not be burnt off and will be stored as fat. During the day your metabolism will have been much lower due to the fact that the small amount of poor quality food you have eaten has not given you as much energy and your metabolism will have been decreased. You are less likely to lose weight under these conditions.

It is also worth remembering that weight loss doesn't necessarily equal fat loss. Very often when you lose weight on a diet you lose muscle not fat. Muscle is needed to burn energy. If you decrease muscle mass, subsequently your metabolic rate will be lower and you won't burn as much energy. This increases your chances of regaining any weight you may have lost and may be the start of what is termed the yo-yo effect, which leads to an increase in your body's set point. If this happens, weight loss can become even more difficult as your body has now "set" your normal weight at a level above that which is desirable. As you can see the issue of how to lose weight can very easily become a vicious cycle.

The ideal weight loss program will encourage your body to convert fat into lean muscle. However although this will give you the streamline figure you so desire you may experience a gain in weight or possibly just stayed the same. The main reason being that muscle weighs heavier than fat. If shape and size is really what you are aiming for then you should be forgetting about the desire to lose weight. Throw away your scales and concentrate on the tried and tested methods of re-sculpturing your body shape by turning fat into lean muscle

There is plenty of good advice available to enable you to do this healthily and with little or no stress on your body. If in doubt, ask yourself the question does this make sense. There is no easy way to lose weight but following the right advice can make it relatively painless and straight forward

Lose Weight

Weight Loss has become the industry of the 21st century. With the increase of fast foods and simple carbohydrate foods many people are finding that they can no longer control their weight and they don't understand why. Education in this area is vital if we are to beat this obesity epidemic. People are desperate to lose weight but are clutching at the latest fad diet and are soon disillusioned when their weight loss isn't sustained and they find they are heavier than they were when they started

According to Dr Jaap Seidell of the International Obesity Task force, the incidence of obesity is on the rise throughout the world making it one of the fastest developing public health concerns. The World Health organization has described it as a "world wide" epidemic. It's estimated that around 250 million people worldwide are obese. This is particularly prevalent in the US where over one third of the adult population are obese and one in seven children and adolescents are obese.

In recent years there have been more and more people jumping on the weight loss bandwagon and producing the latest book on how to lose weight. Apparently there are over 2,000 diet books all claiming miraculous results. Previously most people who wanted to lose weight used the calorie counting diets, which amazingly have somehow survived and are still used today.

Basically calorie controlled diets don't work. Restricting calories doesn't necessarily equate to a well balanced nutritious diet. Often the desire to lose weight can result in dieters skipping meals or eating meals that are high in carbohydrates so that they feel full, not realising that the feeling of fullness will not last and in no time at all they are hungry and searching again for that carbohydrate snack. A packet of biscuits worth 300 calories can easily become a meal substitute for someone who has a carbohydrate or sugar craving and who doesn't understand the principles of good nutrition. Needless to say they are surprised when they don't lose weight and subsequently give up the diet.

My own personal opinion on how to best lose weight has been to find a diet that is right for you and one that you can stick to for the rest of your life. No matter how you try to package the truth, at the end of the day if you are overweight you are either eating too much or you are eating the wrong foods for your body. Your aim should be to lose weight for life not just for a special occasion or perhaps to lose weight with the idea that once you have reached your target weight you can then go back to your old eating habits. I have seen this happen so many times where people reach their target weight and 6 months later they return having put that weight back on and sometimes even more.

If you need to lose weight it is a wake up call to take care of your health. It is in your own interest to research this and find a diet that you can live with that not only helps you to lose weight but also ensures that you reach and maintain optimal health.

Many people don't realise that weight and health are intrinsically connected. If you are overweight then your body is not functioning with optimum health. The two do not go together. So lose weight the healthy way and you will immediately improve your overall state of health.

Weight loss diets have become the talk of the century as people struggle to find quick and easy answers to their weight problems. Weight loss has the same effect many medical conditions, whereby the patient doesn't want to make any lifestyle changes, but wants a magic pill or potion that will solve their problem. Unfortunately in both cases there is no quick fix and in order to "solve the problem" it is important to look at the reasons why the problem exists in the first place.

People are constantly looking for that perfect diet and wonder which one of the numerous diets available they should choose to help them to lose weight? For some people the need to lose weight is a serious life saving business whereas for others it may just be to lose weight to look a little better in that wedding outfit or to get into a new dress for a special occasion. But whatever the reason the desire to lose weight can become an obsession and people will go to unbelievable ends to make this happen.

Whereas most people are content to lose weight by following a simple calorie controlled diet or by attending a club like Weight Watchers, others have to resort to more drastic measures to lose weight, like having their stomach's stapled or undergoing an operation such as liposuction to remove several pounds of fat from their bodies. These people often have a more serious problem needing a more serious approach to help them to lose weight.

So what are the reasons for this surge of interest in the latest ways to lose weight? Basically we are fast developing multiple nations of overweight and even obese individuals who are now wanting to lose weight either because their doctors have advised them to or because they have decided for themselves that they will be healthier if they lose weight or will simply look and feel better.

We are also far more concerned with image, particularly amongst the younger generation who feel they should look like the super models and want to be able to wear the latest fashions. Their desire to lose weight can often become an issue if this becomes an obsession. Many young people who start off wanting to be "super model slim" can very easily become anorexic if it is in their nature to become overly obsessive

Our governments are constantly throwing statistics at us about the growing number of obese individuals, especially children, and are now introducing ways of helping these individuals to lose weight. Whole families are being put on programs to help them to lose weight and several television programs are also jumping on the bandwagon, promising to help you to "lose weight and shape up in six weeks". This is often a combination of a weight loss diet and an exercise program to help to speed up the process.

Of course the cycle wouldn't be complete without some expectation that schools should play their part and ensure that young people are educated about the need for healthy eating. Perhaps they will also be expecting the schools to educate the parents also, after all healthy eating begins in the home!! In my experience far too many parents indulge their children by giving in to their fads and fancies and are too eager to give them sugary treats and too often have trips to the fast food establishments. There is nothing to beat some good home cooking with natural ingredients. The sooner parents realize this the sooner the obesity epidemic will diminish and the need to lose weight will be a thing of the past.

My ideas may be seen as "old fashioned" but at the end of the day the ever growing need to lose weight is a modern epidemic. So perhaps the old fashioned ideas are not such a bad idea after all.
